Judges’ Comments:
Diana Stancy of Navy Times uncovered records showing that Cmdr. Cameron Dennis was relieved of command of the destroyer Howard because of several “racially harassing comments;” the Navy had said publicly that he was relieved due to a loss of confidence in his ability to carry out his duties. Using records she received after filing a Freedom of Information Act request, Stancy was able to provide in vivid and unsettling detail the derogatory remarks Dennis made to Black female sailor and, in a separate incident, to a Black male officer.
