Military Reporters & Editors condemns the killings of 5 Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, calls for fair and independent investigation into the strike.
WASHINGTON – August 12, 2025 – Military Reporters & Editors (MRE) mourns the loss of the Al Jazeera journalists killed in Gaza by an Israeli air strike. They are Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qrieqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal.
We extend our deepest condolences to their families, colleagues, and all who knew them. Their deaths are not only a personal tragedy but a devastating blow to the free press, which serves as the world’s eyes and ears in the darkest moments of conflict.
The deliberate or reckless targeting of journalists, whether in Gaza, Lebanon, or elsewhere, has a chilling effect on truth-telling. It deprives the public of essential, on-the-ground reporting and undermines the ability to bear witness to war’s most extreme atrocities.
At least 242 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to the UN.
The killing of veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh of Al Jazeera in 2022 remains a haunting reminder of the dangers faced by reporters in the region, and the lack of full accountability in her case underscores the urgency for change. She was shot in the neck with precision between her flack vest and helmet.
We condemn these killings in the strongest possible terms and call for a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into the strike that took their lives. International humanitarian law is clear: journalists are civilians and must be protected.
MRE stands with all those who risk their safety to bring the truth to light. We urge governments, militaries, and armed groups to take immediate, concrete measures to ensure the safety of journalists, and we commit to continuing our work to defend the rights and security of those reporting from the world’s most dangerous front lines.
