Davis Winkie from Military Times and James Barragán from The Texas Tribune awarded print media prize by Military Reporters & Editors


WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 — During its annual conference for journalists who cover the military, Military Reporters & Editors presented awards to the winners of the 2024 MRE Journalism Contest. Davis Winkie and James Barragán’s entry published by Army Times/Military Times and The Texas Tribune was singled out by judges as exceptional work in investigative reporting.

Davis Winkie Biography

Davis Winkie, 2024 MRE Journalism Contest winner

Davis Winkie covered the Army for Military Times from his hometown of Atlanta, where he specializes in investigative reporting, data journalism and personnel beat coverage. Davis was a 2022 Livingston Awards finalist, and his other reporting accolades include the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2023 Sunshine Award and back-to-back honors from the Military Reporters and Editors Association in 2022 and 2023. Davis, a father, served five years in the Army National Guard and is today a part-time officer in the Georgia Air National Guard. He received his undergraduate degree in history and classics from Vanderbilt University and completed a master’s in military history at UNC-Chapel Hill.


James Barragán Biography

James Barragán is a politics reporter for The Texas Tribune with a focus on accountability reporting. He was on leave during the 2023-24 academic year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. Prior to joining the Tribune, James worked as a statehouse reporter for The Dallas Morning News and had previous stints at the Austin American-Statesman and the Los Angeles Times. In 2021, James was a finalist for the Toner Prize for Excellence in Local Reporting for his coverage of Texas politics during the COVID-19 pandemic. A Southern California native, James received his bachelor’s degree in history from UCLA. He is based in Austin and is a native Spanish speaker.
