The group has five types of membership:

PROFESSIONAL: Actively engaged in reporting, editing, photography and graphics for print, broadcast or online. Includes full-time freelancers.

ACADEMIC: Full-time teaching or research in journalism.

ASSOCIATE: Former journalists and educators engaged in a non-journalism occupation, military and civilian public affairs officials and other who wish to join. This membership has non-voting status.

RETIRED: Retired journalists and educators.

STUDENT: Currently pursuing a college or university degree in journalism. Non-voting status. Student members get reduced membership dues.

Military Reporters and Editors is a non-profit organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. We do not discriminate in membership because of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status. We even allow public relations professionals join.
